Java SE was not enough for this alone so we started using Libgdx. This forced us to refactor a lot of the code base, but now we can target on Android too. The performance is a lot better too!
You can see “chunks” working (blocks disappearing and reappearing). Now the blocks are just serialized and deserialized from the disk. The player can also destroy blocks and build new ones. Still quite simple stuff, but you just must begin somewhere right?
